Taking the day off

I decided to take the day off and go play in the mountains yesterday. I was so excited to go play that I did not sleep well the night before. All the ideas and plans for how I would make the most of the day were rifling through my head.
I woke early to make the most of the Spring sunshine and found myself so tired I had to lay back down. So much for plan number one of starting early.
Once I finally woke up and got the day started I decided to head to a local hot springs for a soak. I booked an hour in a private bath figuring that would be a good prelude to an early afternoon of hiking or snow shoeing in the mountains.
The timer in my bath did not work, but I figured they would come let me know when my hour was up. So I just did not trouble myself with time and just relaxed and enjoyed.
Finally, I felt like I had soaked long enough even though I figured it had not been an hour yet since no one had come to get me yet. So I got dressed and went up to return my key.
I decided to sit and read in the warm sunshine for a bit before leaving the springs for my active afternoon in the mountains. After a while I was feeling hungry, which surprised me since it was only about 11:30 by my calculations.
I went in to return my reading materials and noticed a clock in the lobby. I had to do a double take. It was nearly 1:00 in the afternoon. I had been in the bath for over 2 1/2 hours. No wonder I was so hungry. So much for plan #2 of getting an early afternoon start on my hike.
I found a great place for lunch and started to feel really tired. That soak must have really taken it out of me, I thought. Then I realized I was not just tired, I was getting sick. Since I did not want to get sicker, I reluctantly chose to cancel the activities in the mountains that afternoon and head home to, hopefully, knock out this illness before it got too entrenched. There goes plan #3.
On the drive home, I found myself frustrated that all my plans had gone awry. Then I started laughing. When had I become such a planner, I thought? I had just planned out my spontaneous day off.
That is when I was reminded of a saying I often use in my work. If you want to make God laugh, tell him, her, it your plans. God must have been laughing its little butt off yesterday. Luckily, I was too.
