The Storm

Last night I went downtown to take a bus to meet a friend for a concert in Denver. As I was walking to the station, it started to snow. I knew snow was expected, but have never seen it hit like this.
It went from no snow, only rain, to at least two inches an hour. I gauged this rate of snowfall on the fact that when I got on the bus there was hardly any snow on the ground and when I got off the bus two hours and forty-five minutes later there was 6 – 8 inches on the ground. Heavy, wet, slippery Spring snow.
So I mentioned a 2 hour and 45 minute bus ride. Well that ride did not get me to Denver. Not even close. In fact I only made it a couple miles out of Boulder. The traffic was at a stand still and since we had only made it a third of the way to my destination in almost three hours and the concert was starting in 15 minutes, I got off the bus and started walking home.
One of the great things about snowstorms, is that it makes hitch hiking very easy. People take pity on anyone out walking in a sideways snow storm. I stuck out my thumb and the second car come along stopped to give me a ride. Her name was Debra and she was my snow storm angel.
I could tell she was nervous driving in these treacherous conditions, but there was very few cars going into Boulder as we were, so she could take it slow and be careful. She dropped me at the bus stop and what had taken me more than two and a half hours to go one direction took only a few minutes to travel in the other direction.
Thank you Debra! Your kindness helped shift a long, boring journey into futility into a memorable adventure.
